Our Tartan Artisans

Our Tartan Artisans

We at ‘Lawrence’s Seven Pillars of Khaki’ carefully considered where and to who would be entrusted to make our unique tartan before choosing our craft-partners Johnstons of Elgin, as we share similar core values or business principles identified in our ‘Seven Pillars of Authenticity’.

Johnstons of Elgin

Johnstons of Elgin has a rich heritage of traditional expertise in quality textile manufacturing and as weavers of luxury cashmere and exceptional quality wool products. For over 200 years, the family-owned mill, which nestles beside the River Lossie in Moray, is the last vertical mill in Scotland. This means it retains the capability to take raw fibres right at the beginning and through over 30 other different processes to the finished product.

In 2013, the high quality of the textiles produced through the professionalism and expertise of the craftsmen and women of Johnstons of Elgin, together with ethical business philosophies, has resulted in them being awarded a Royal Warrant from HRH Prince Charles, Prince of Wales, Duke of Rothsay.

Atkinsons

Once our tartan cloth is made, we next entrust our Northern Ireland craft partners, Atkinsons to make our Lawrence Seven Pillars of Khaki Tartan neckties for men.

Atkinsons, like Johnstons of Elgin a similarly long history going back over 190 years of making quality men’s neckties that are hand-finished, as well as Irish Poplin, in their factory based in Newtownabbey, Northern Ireland.

Richard Atkinson first started making fine Irish Poplin (a blend of fine silk and wool yarns) in 1820, and the fabric became synonymous with quality and the rich and distinctive patterns, including regimental stripes were quickly adopted by the Royal Houses of Europe and were awarded Royal Warrants by Queen Victoria. It is still common to see the British Royal Family sporting an Atkinsons Royal Poplin Tie, the choice of Princes and Kings to be.
